Daulat Ram College has excellent progressive vision in the area of environment and sustainability. The duo visionary of the institution are Dr. Savita Roy (College Principal) and Dr. Sarita Nanda (Associate Professor) who are also recipient of Excellence Awards 2019 in the area of Environment and sustainability. Under their guidance the college has taken several steps and initiatives which are applaud worthy and has a great positive impact on students and society. The college has taken several action led initiatives in the area and has created unique niche areas for student led research and capacity building. The areas which are quite popular among students and community people are plastic waste management, domestic waste management and composting. Recently on 4th June 2020, to mark World Environment Day 2020, college celebrated the occasion through an online webinar. Overall 125 participants were registered for the event. It included students, faculty and scientists. The theme of the webinar was “Celebrating Biodiversity” which is theme of this year World Environment Day.
The event was started with a Green Quiz on World Environment Day and Biodiversity. This was followed by a movie by Bombay Natural History Society on Conservation efforts ongoing at Asola Bhatti Mines to maintain biodiversity. Next was the presentation on biodiversity by Dr. Anju Jain, Senior Assistant Professor at Zoology Department of Daulat Ram College. Question Answers on this topic were answered by Mr. Ishitiyak Ahmad, Education Officer at Conservation Education Centre. There were plethora of questions from various participants, some of them being asked were about the steps taken at international and national levels to protect the biodiversity, how food chain is affecting biodiversity, in what manner carbon emissions are hazardous to biodiversity.
The webinar has received a special session on “Biodiversity & Urban Farming” by Mr. Pravin Mishra (a terrace gardening expert). He spoke on management of Local Environment by waste management and using it in Gardening.
The webinar was organized by Dr.Sarita Nanda, Department of Biochemistry. The Patron for the event was Dr. Savita Roy. The other members of the organizing committee was Dr Anju Jain (Senior Assistant Professor), Ms. Raman Arora, Dr Neetu Aggarwal, Dr. Meenakshi Thakur, Dr.Radhika Gupta, Dr. Arif Ahamad who are Assistant Professors in the college.
