February 16, 2022

About Savitri Bai Phule

Savitri bai Phule was an educationist, feminist, poet and social reformist from Maharashtra, India. She is regarded as a first female teacher and mother of Indian Feminism. Besides all this, what makes her more relevant in this current context of Samrastha in India is that She had a great vision and understanding, especially, with respect to British strategy of divide and rule in India in the name of caste and religion. Her vision and understanding can be felt by reading her poems which she had written herself during that time. In some of her poems she had clearly mentioned and warned the kids to not to get into the trap of caste if they want to become a progressive society.

To fight the British fuelled caste system and for social reforms in India she along with her husband (Jyoti Rao Phule) founded the Satya Shodhak Samaj in 1873. However, after the death of Savitri bai Phule and Jyoti Rao Phule, the values and objective of the Satya Shodhak Samaj got diluted. It was the time of British playing the last leg of divide and rule politics in India in the name of religion before leaving the country. Which ended up dividing India into two parts (India and Pakistan) in the name of religion.

People from Satya Shodhak Samaj also may be couldn’t resist to become the part of ongoing political movement and abandoned the satya shodhak samaj to join the National congress of that time.
